Merger of Local Companies a Recipe for Success


Four of the top Mexican food brands in the Midwest joined forces under one corporate entity September 8, 2008. This marked the official merger of Kansas City-based LiíL Guy Foods and Tortilla King, Inc. of Moundridge, Kansas. The LiíL Guy, Miranda, Mama Lupeís and La Comida brands, which account for 20% of the entire KC market share (including national brands) according to AC Nielsen 2006-2007, now operate under the Tortilla King, Inc. corporate name. Headquarters are based in Moundridge, Kansas with a Kansas City, Missouri site for distribution, office and sales staff. The merger was approved unanimously by the Boards of Directors of both LiíL Guy Mexican Foods and Tortilla King, Inc.

Leadership of both companies realized the benefits of merging to bolster the positions of their brands and continue their respective track records of delivering exceptional quality, while expanding appeal across differing customer demographic segments within the industry. The joining of these two companies will pave the way for additional growth and higher return on investment for partners by expanding retail presence and more than doubling the regional footprint of each company to a combined 13-state territory. The new streamlined operation aims to capitalize on the industry expertise members of each companyís management bring to the table. Tortilla King has established best-practice efficiencies in manufacturing, food safety, procurement, marketing, IT and supply-chain management. LiíL Guy Foods is KCís largest local brand and is recognized for their authentic recipes. In addition, LiíL Guy is a certified women- and minority-owned business boasting an award-winning sales force and a well-deserved reputation for building steadfast community relationships.

The new company will have an estimated 150 employees, led by President, Juan Guardiola. All 20 LiíL Guy production employees were offered positions at the Moundridge plant and will have moving expenses paid. LiíL Guyís Kansas City offices will remain open and staffed by current LiíL Guy administrative and sales staff to provide seamless service to all accounts. Tenure will be transferred and all will have benefits with waiting periods waived by Tortilla King. The owners/operators of LiíL Guy Foods, David Sloan and Christina Sloan will be appointed members of Tortilla Kingís Board of Directors and will continue to be involved. Existing recipe formulations and product characteristics will remain the same for all brands.
