Executive Chef Gabriel Mejia, of Corona Cantina, #1 Kansas City, competes in the 2007 Taste of Excellence invitational competition.


Taste of Elegance is one of the major cooking events for professional chefs in the industry. Sponsored by the National Pork Board, this culinary competition is designed to inspire innovative and exciting ways to menu pork.

Since 1987, the Taste of Elegance competition has evolved into more than twenty regional competitions annually. Winning chefs are invited to participate in the National Taste of Elegance.

The national event brings together talented, winning chefs from across the country. The program provides an exciting competition in the chef community while also serving as a learning exchange for the chefs.

At every competition, prizes are awarded for outstanding pork dishes based on a variety of factors, including taste, originality and presentation. Judges for the events have included master chefs, food editors and past Taste of Elegance winners. (source: PorkFoodService.com)

The kitchen team at Corona Cantina, #1 uses many items from the Li'L Guy including, taco shells, corn tortillas, and tortilla chips. Chef Mejia even used Li'L Guy tortilla chips at his table during the Taste of Elegance competition.

Gabriel was born in Mexico City and grew up watching his mother cook with the freshest ingredients possible. The neighborhoods of Mexico City were the best because one could find fresh produce, a butcher, and a tienda grande (market) every other ½ of mile. Mother owned a small restaurant and working in her kitchen gave Gabriel the basic knowledge and a love for the art of cooking.

Gabriel went to college and graduated with a degree in hotel management from El Centro de Estudios Lomas. With 1 year of culinary arts under his belt he came to the U.S.A. in 1997 and began working with some of the best chefs in Kansas City. That time included stints with Patrick Quillec at the Omni Hotel and "Chef of the Year" Gary Hill at the Marriott, Overland Park.

Says Gabriel of his past experience, "I have been the sous chef at Unity Village, W.J. McBrides and Melbee’s. Later I served as Executive Chef at DiCarlo’s Mustard Seed before starting my current job as the Executive Chef at Corona Cantina, #1 at the Legends."

Last year Chef Mejia participated in the Taste of Elegance and the Taste of Kansas City Iron Fork competitions.
